Book Review: Something Special by Dina S.

At the start of October I got my copy of Something Special from Dina S. featuring a gorgeous book cover and filled with little goodies, and the sweetest autograph inside. I’ve been waiting months to read this book ever since I devoured Nothing Special back in the summer. I am not normally a big rom com reader, but Dina has a way of writing that just keeps me hooked. I have to know where things will end up, and there’s always this tingling sense that a bigger storm is brewing on the horizon…

And BOY was there. I read Something Special and found myself hanging on by tooth and nail at the end of every chapter. The book feels like walking a tightrope because you want so badly for Paisley to get everything she rightfully deserves, a happy, stable, good relationship, but every twist and turn feels destined to keep her from that. It was infuriatingly good. I am a big sucker for well written characters, and these guys had me feeling for both sides of the aisle.

I adored as well the fact that just as book one left me with hints of something bigger, something special out there in the magical world, book two hit it home. Something Special perfectly built to the climax I didn’t know I was waiting for, and now I’m going to need book three in my lap tomorrow or else I might just wither away. Dina weaves the rocky relationship between morsels of intrigue about the magical world in a way that feels natural, exciting, and gripping. I wasn’t ready for the ending, but I am certain I’m ready for more.

Something Special is at it’s core, romance, but for me the book is so much more than that. It’s a mystery of magic all wrapped up in a blanket of tears and joy and all manner of emotions. It’s raw in the way it accurately depicts some of the struggles of relationships. I want everything good for my girl Paisley, and also sometimes want to scream at her to stop being an idiot, but that’s why I love her. She feels real. She feels like someone I could sit down and befriend, and she reminds me of me. Dina has championed writing characters that don’t just exist between pages, but could jump right off at any moment and exist in reality. I highly recommend this book, and this trilogy to anyone who enjoys grounded writing that builds into fantasy intrigue. This will keep you hooked.

Now we wait for book three…
